Ok, “manifestation” has been a term that people have thrown around for a while now. It’s such a buzzword that it probably has started to annoy most people, and for the overtly cynical, it’s become a well-worn trope of New Agey pseudoscience.
However, even though it might be vile for you, manifestation is entirely rooted in reality and in science. Specifically, it works with the subconscious mind to help you find the right opportunities and pursue the correct behaviors that will get you to where you want to be.
In order to understand how it works, we first have to understand what the subconscious mind does and why we work with it directly (using things like hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming).
At its core, the subconscious mind is responsible for processing a great deal of information. If we had to handle thinking about every little thing happening in the world around us, we would go insane. To spare us, it distills over 2 million bits of info at any given time and feeds a little over 100 essentials back to the conscious mind to process.

And even though we usually can’t remember huge chunks of our lives, our subconscious does store every last memory. They’ve found patients awake in brain surgery can recall even the most distant memories when that part of their brain was activated with an electrical impulse. So, I promise it’s all there!
Given that the subconscious is doing all this stuff without us even noticing it, it’s really no surprise how powerful it is at also regulating our habits. Habits are done unconsciously, and with repetition, new habits can be formed in the subconscious mind.
So how does this all help you?
Well, when we are working on manifestation using the subconscious mind, we are directing it (specifically, we are directing our brain’s reticular activating system) to find all data that is useful and relevant to our desired outcome.
If we want to manifest our dream partner, and we are conscious of exactly what we are looking for and direct our subconscious to this, then it will begin to find all the relevant information that will lead us to this person in a much quicker and intentional way than if we had just gone through life with our head down.
The subconscious mind loves commands. It wants to be given a direction. Otherwise, it has all this data and no way to sort it. So the act of manifesting works with this and uses it to your advantage.
It’s also important to be aware of the general layout of the subconscious mind.
For example:
- It operates in symbols. This means words are not as powerful as images and symbols. If you have a vision board, you are tapping into the way your subconscious mind is already processing things.
- It takes everything personally. Stop calling other people names because, to your subconscious mind, that may as well be you. It doesn’t recognize others, only itself. So everything you speak will come back onto you. We don’t want to manifest negativity!
- It does not process negatives and doesn’t like generalizations. This means you need to be very specific about what you want and state it in the positive. So, don’t say, “I don’t want to be fat”. Do say, “I want to lose 10 pounds by November 1st.” If you infuse your subconscious with the words of “don’t” and “not”, it will actually disregard those and just see it as, “I want to be fat”. That is counterproductive.
So when you want to begin your manifesting journey, make sure you’re telling your subconscious mind exactly what you want and back it up with a symbolic image to represent it.
Manifestation is really just a way for us to focus our mind to bring us back the data we need so that we can ultimately act on it and create a change in our lives.

It’s not about having everything just gifted to you- even though that would be nice. It does involve the next layer of using the opportunities and information that’s presented to you to create the change in your life with your own behavior. You can also use your subconscious to create positive habits that will result in the changes you want to see. Regardless, given this information, you can see the subconscious is a necessary tool that we often ignore in our lives. Instead, let’s use it to our advantage by giving it directions to follow and creating habits that work for us, not against us.
