Astrology for the Soul
>>>All of the planetary energy keys below are derived from the astrology course: Unlock Your Cosmic Calling by Soulshine Astrology. If you enjoy her synopsis, I highly recommend taking the course!<<<
Astrology is much more than just your horoscope or sun sign. It can tell us a lot about our personalities and certain events that are likely to happen in our lives just by looking at the way the sky looked at the moment we were born.
Astrologers need the exact time, date and place of your birth in order to precisely see where a number of planets were located in the sky at that moment. Astrologers like to use planets, stars, asteroids, and other astrological bodies in order to determine our tendencies or characteristics as a person.
The most important astrological bodies and points that make up our personality are the Sun, Moon, and Rising Sign.
Your core essence, your ego, passions, desires and creative life force.
Your inner emotional landscape and what helps you feel nurtured and secure.
Your acquired identity. The traits you’ve developed out of necessity in your childhood (or past lives). These traits are not inherent to you but you use them so often that the world sees you this way. It influences the way you look, how you dress, and even your job.
If you go to this website, you can put in your birth information and see where your Sun, Moon and Rising Sign were located when you were born. You’ll see that each one is placed within a house and a zodiac sign. The Rising Sign is always placed at the cusp (or line) of the very first house.
Imagine we took a picture of the sky and it was a circular photo. Then, we divided up that circle into little pieces of pie called “houses”. Over many years, astrologers have found that as planets move through different regions of the sky, there were different energies or events that seemed to coincide with their movement. They were able to correlate different pie pieces in the sky (or houses) to certain areas of life here on Earth. I’ve included a key below for you to see.
1︎ Self-Identity, Physical body
2 ︎ Values & Desires, Personal Finances, Possessions
3︎ ︎ Networking, Nearby community, Siblings, Conscious mind, Early education
4︎ ︎ Home & Family, Ancestral roots, Real estate, Subconscious mind
5︎ ︎ Fun & Creativity, Children, Hobbies, Sex, Pleasure, Self-expression, Vacation
6︎ ︎ Health, Work & Daily Activities, Service, Duties, Hygiene, Enemies
7︎ ︎ Relationships, Marriage, Close associates, Contracts
8︎ ︎ Financial Security, Business and Other People’s Money, Birth, Death, Investment, Inheritance, Big business
9︎ ︎ Discovery, Higher Learning, Long-Distance Travel, Foreign things/people, Higher mind, Philosophy, Religion, Publishing
10︎ ︎ Career and Legacy, Wordly status, Ambition, Authority, Father
11 ︎ Friendship & Community, Hopes, Goals, Humanitarianism, Groups, Friends
12︎ ︎ Mystical Pursuits, Spirituality, Subconscious, Self-undoing, Unseen causes, Isolation, Fears, Secrets, Confinement (prison and hospitals)
So, for example, I have my Sun in the 9th house. This means a core part of who I am, my life force and passion, will revolve around discovery and learning. The 9th house is also often associated with long-distance travel and higher learning. It’s no surprise that I have obtained a Master’s degree, traveled to over 35 countries and have lived abroad in 3 different countries for a number of years. It’s literally a part of my astrological makeup.
My moon, or my emotional side, is in the 4th house of home and family. That means that I feel the safest and most emotionally fulfilled in life when I’m surrounded by my family and loved ones. Of course, this is at odds with the other side of myself that desires to travel the world. I think these differences in my personality are what made me so attracted to astrology in the first place. As I began to learn more about myself and others, I finally was able to find relief in understanding that I have very different sides of myself that all need to be satisfied – and that’s ok, I’m not crazy!
When you’re first starting out with astrology, you’ll find that it’s a lot like cooking. There are different ingredients that you need to combine in order to have a full meal. So, after you examine which house your Sun, Moon, and Rising Sign fall in, you then need to add in the zodiac sign those three were in when you were born. Each zodiac sign is linked to a constellation in the sky and represents the way in which we deal with life.
We all know that some people are “Virgos” or “Capricorns”, but normally that’s only talking about where the Sun was located when we were born. We also need to know the zodiac signs of each planet in our birth chart in order to gain a fuller picture. An interpretation of all three of these elements (planet, house, zodiac sign) mixed together will help you determine some of what the stars have written for your life.

My Sun is in Gemini in the 9th house. That means how I move through life is often at a very fast mental pace. I can be scattered and run a bit nervous, even if others don’t notice. I also like to multitask or work on a number of projects at once. I don’t think I’ve ever had only one job at a time.
Look at where your Sun, Moon and Rising sign are located and see which house they are in. Then, just combine the three ingredients to get a basic picture of your personality type!
Planet = type of energy
Zodiac sign = how you express that energy
House = domain of life in which the energy is expressed
——-> Planet x zodiac sign + house = you!
Of course, if you’ve looked at the website I recommended, you’ll see that there’s a lot more than just your Sun, Moon and Rising sign. We also have a whole slew of other planets that determine our personality traits.
The planets that are closer to the Earth and Sun move quickly around, changing zodiac signs relatively often. These planets are called “personal planets” because they are uniquely placed for most individuals. We all have a beautiful blend of planetary placements.
However, there are also “generational planets” which travel very slowly. These planets can be in a place in the sky for a long period of time so many people within a generation will have a planet in the same zodiac sign (but a different house). Pluto, for example, is a generational planet. My Pluto is in the zodiac sign of Scorpio and will be in Scorpio for anyone who was born between the years of November 1983 and November 1995. That means that all the people born between this period will share similar qualities that are related to both Pluto and Scorpio.
Each planet and each zodiac sign are intimately linked to certain domains of life and also certain characteristics. These were born out of Greek mythology and astrologers’ observation over many centuries. Each personal planet has its own backstory which highlights the personality traits associated with it. For the sake of brevity, I won’t go into these stories, but I highlighted the important characteristics associated with each planet below as well as the domains of life they “rule over” below.
